Young Composers Contest Rules
Application Deadline: August 15, 2012
Student Eligibility
- Students must study with a teacher who is affiliated with NCMTA.
Teacher Eligibility
- Teachers must hold current membership with NCMTA.
- The teacher, the student, or place of instruction must be located in North Carolina.
- A teacher may enter an unlimited number of students.
Composition Manuscript
- Each student may enter only one (1) composition. (No staples, please.)
- Each composition must be at least 16 measures in length, and must be in the composer's handwriting, or in the form of a computer printout produced by the composer.
- A fully realized score is required.
- The composition should be written for no more than 9 performers.
- Measures should be numbered at the beginning of each system.
- Each page should be labeled with the student's name and category (Elementary, Junior, Senior, Young Artist).
- The teacher's name should not appear on the manuscript.
- Students may design or illustrate a title page (with title and student's name).
- The title page (which will not be judged) should be 8 x 11 size.
Entrant information (Student's age as of January 1, 2012)
Elementary (ages 5 - 10) Fee - $15 Maximum time 3 minutes
Junior (ages 11 - 14) Fee - $20 Maximum time 3 minutes
Senior (ages 15 - 18) Fee - $25 Maximum time 5 minutes
Young Artist (ages 19 - 26) Fee - $30 Maximum time 7 minutes
Composition Submission
- Students must enter a different piece from the MTNA Composition Competition
- A CD or cassette recording is required for each category.
- No changes may be made after submitting the composition.
- Each student should keep a copy of his or her manuscript.
- Include an SASE with proper postage for the return of manuscript/CD/cassette.
- NCMTA is not responsible for materials lost in the mail.
Adjudication
- The compositions will be adjudicated by one judge.
- There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awarded with Honorable Mentions given to deserving compositions.
State Conference Young Composers Recital
All winners of the competition including Honorable Mentions will be showcased in a recital at the State Conference. Though memorization is not a requirement, each performance must be well prepared.
The judge's Comment Sheet, manuscript, CD/cassette will be returned in the SASE provided by each entrant.
